Biogas as an umbrella term is produced in biogas plants during the anaerobic fermentation of organic input materials such as maize, slurry or residues. The organic material is first broken down by microorganisms in the various tanks of a biogas plant and decomposed into smaller chemical compounds (organic acids). So-called methanogenic microorganisms form methane and carbon dioxide from these organic acids.
